World's No. 3 Botnet Taken Down

Ars Technica is reporting that a group of white hat researchers have brought down the world's third largest botnet, known as Grum, by convincing the companies that hosted the servers controlling it to shut it down.

According to the report, the last servers, six in Ukraine and another one in Russia, were shut down Wednesday. This is seen as especially important because those countries have been thought of as safe havens for botnet operators.

Grum was apparently generating about 18 percent of the world's spam.
