Hackers Encrypt Server and Demand Ransom

Bloomberg Business is reporting that someone hacked into the network of an Illinois medical facility, encrypted a server containing e-mails and electronic medical records of patients, and is now demanding a ransom for the encryption key.

New Twist on Computer Security

No one, except those with the encryption key, can access the medical records on the server. According to the report, the doctors turned off the server, refused to pay and notified authorities.

Move to the Cloud and Archive There

Moving data and email records to a secure cloud-based provider with archiving capabilities could prevent this type of attack. Good cloud-based providers maintain redundant primary and archive servers at different geographical locations. That can enhance email and data security immensely in the event of a disaster or hacking attack.
