Blocking Trackers in Firefox

This article has an easy-to-use installation guide for plugins that block certain programs known as trackers from running in your browser.

We strongly recommend that you read this previous article about trackers before deciding whether or not to install these plugins. We do not endorse or recommend the use of any of these plugins. They are written by third-party software providers and are generally free of charge. Use them at your own risk.

To install Ghostery

Warning: We've noticed that Firefox might be crashing more with Ghostery installed.
  1. Go to https://www.ghostery.com/try-us/download-browser-extension/
  2. Select "Download Ghostery for Firefox now!"
  3. At the top left of your screen, near the URL bar, Firefox will ask for permission to install the plugin. Click on Allow.
  4. Once more, around the center of your screen, Firefox will ask for permission to install Ghostery. Click on "Install now".
  5. At the top left of your screen, Firefox should be asking to restart. Click on "Restart now"
  6. A new tab will now open for configuration. Click on "Get Started"
    • If you wish to participate in anonymous statistics gathering, click "Enable GhostRank".
If you wish to disable auto updating, uncheck "Enable library auto-update".
    • Otherwise, click "Next".
  7. By default, Ghostery will not block anything.
    • To block third party elements, Click "Select all".
    • To block third party cookies, click on the cookies tab and then click on "Select all". Click on next, and you're done!

To install Adblock

  1. Go to https://adblockplus.org
  2. On the middle of the left hand side of the page, click on "Install Adblock Plus"
  3. Back up at your URL Bar, Firefox will ask permission to install Adblock. Click on the Allow Button.
  4. Once more, Firefox will prompt you for permission to install the addon. Click on "Install Now."
  5. Back at your URL bar, firefox will prompt you to restart your browser. Click on "Restart"

To Install NoScript

  1. Go to http://noscript.net/getit
  2. On the middle of top of the page, click on "Install"
  3. Back up at your URL Bar, Firefox will ask permission to install NoScript. Click on the Allow Button.
  4. Once more, Firefox will prompt you for permission to install the addon. Click on "Install Now."
  5. Back at your URL bar, firefox will prompt you to restart your browser. Click on "Restart"

Note: Once you've installed NoScript, a lot of websites are going to appear broken. That's by design. When you're on a site that you want to see, right click on the NoScript button. Then:

  • Click "Allow <website>" if you want to let all scripts on that site run every time you're there. You might want to do this for trustworthy sites that you visit frequently.
  • Click "Temporarily allow all" to let all of the scripts run this time only. You might do this if there are too many scripts to allow one by one (for example, on streaming sites).
  • Click "Temporarily allow" to select which scripts to run on the site. This is the safest option.
